project details
This project consisted of the complete reconstruction of the River Bulkhead Wall along the Chicago River at Amtrak’s 14th Street Yard.
Work began with removal of the existing pavement and railings followed by 2125 CY of excavation behind the existing dockwall. 240 LF of existing sheet piling and concrete caps were demolished and removed to allow for proper installation of the 18,000 SF of new sheet piling.
The winter of 2008 caused a harsh freeze thaw cycle which buckled the sheet pile wall. To solve this situation, Rausch installed a sheet pile jack to pull in the sheets and install the dead-man wall. 255 LF of dead man sheeting was installed with tie back anchors from the new sheet pile dockwall.
The site was finished with 2410 CY of porous granular fill, above which a bituminous asphalt road was installed.
The majority of work was performed from the river side using Rausch-owned barges and marine equipment.
